First Knowledges
The First Knowledges series offers an introduction to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander knowledges in vital areas and their application to the present day and the future. Exploring practices such as architecture and design, land management, medicine, astronomy and innovation, this seven-book series brings together two very different ways of understanding the natural world: one ancient, the other modern. Each book is a collaboration between First Nations and non-Indigenous writers and editors. The series is edited by Margo Neale, senior curator at the National Museum of Australia.
For any Green-Witches who aim to live in alignment with their environment, we can ignore the rich history, knowledge, and culture of Indigenous Australian’s - knowledge that emerged through and from these lands, seas and skies. More generally for Australian-based changemakers, these Indigenous knowledge systems, rooted in millennia of connection to land, community, and spirituality, offer holistic perspectives that can complement and enrich Western approaches to problem-solving and decision-making. By engaging with Indigenous knowledge, changemakers gain a deeper understanding of issues such as environmental sustainability, social justice, and cultural diversity.
Books in this series include:
Songlines: The Power and Promise Weaving deeply personal storytelling with extensive research on mnemonics, this book offers unique insights into Indigenous traditional knowledges, how they apply today and how they could help all peoples thrive into the future.
Design: Building on Country Aboriginal design is of a distinctly cultural nature, based in the Dreaming and in ancient practices grounded in Country. This book issues a challenge for a new Australian design ethos, one that truly responds to the essence of Country and its people.
Country: Future Fire, Future Farming For millennia, Indigenous Australians harvested this continent in ways that can offer contemporary environmental and economic solutions. This book highlights the consequences of ignoring our history and details the remarkable agricultural and land-care techniques of First Nations peoples.
Astronomy: Sky Country Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are the oldest scientists in human history. Explore the connections between Aboriginal environmental and cultural practices and the behaviour of the stars, and consider what must be done to sustain our dark skies, and the information they hold, into the future.
Plants: Past, Present and Future Plants are the foundation of life on Earth. Plants: Past, Present and Future celebrates the deep cultural significance of plants to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and shows how engaging with this heritage could be the key to a healthier, more sustainable future.
Law: The Way of the Ancestors Law is culture, and culture is law. Given by the ancestors and cultivated over millennia, Indigenous law defines what it is to be human. Complex and evolving, law holds the keys to resilient, caring communities and a life in balance with nature. Law: The Way of the Ancestors challenges readers to consider how Indigenous law can inspire new ways forward for us all in the face of global crises.

Roy Bhaskar
Roy Bhaskar was a distinguished philosopher best known for developing the philosophy of critical realism. His work has profoundly influenced the fields of social science, philosophy, and ontology. Bhaskar’s critical realism provides a framework for understanding the complex interplay between structure and agency, reality and perception. His writings offer deep insights into the nature of reality, scientific inquiry, and the potential for social transformation. Bhaskar's rigorous and transformative approach continues to inspire scholars and activists committed to understanding and changing the world.
This is an academic recommendation - the work of Bhaskar is likely expensive or difficult to access without a university affiliation and access to your institutions library. The work is dense, jargon heavy, and mostly relies on the reader having at least a foundational understanding of academic text. However, Bhaskar’s philosophy and meta-theory is simply unparalleled in academia - across the three waves of his philosophy (basic critical realism, dialectic, and meta-reality) he establishes a way of understanding reality through realist ontology and relativist epistemology that can ground so much of the work we do as changemakers and in the spiritual realm. For a primer, I recommend Enlightened Commonsense - if your like it, then try the others. If you want to watch the philosophy unfold and deepen its understanding of ontology, read them in this order:
Enlightened Common Sense: The Philosophy of Critical Realism "Enlightened Common Sense" serves as a comprehensive introduction to the philosophy of critical realism. Bhaskar articulates the core principles of critical realism, emphasising its practical implications for scientific inquiry and social research. This book is designed to make Bhaskar's complex ideas accessible to a broader audience, providing clear explanations and practical applications. It is an invaluable resource for students, scholars, and activists interested in the philosophical foundations of social change and the pursuit of truth and justice.
A Realist Theory of Science "A Realist Theory of Science" is one of Roy Bhaskar’s seminal works, laying the foundations for the philosophy of critical realism. In this book, Bhaskar critiques traditional empiricism and positivism, advocating for a more nuanced understanding of scientific inquiry that acknowledges the reality of unobservable structures and mechanisms. This book is essential for anyone interested in the philosophy of science and its implications for understanding and transforming the social world. Bhaskar's arguments provide a robust framework for analysing social change from a critical realist perspective.
The Possibility of Naturalism: A Philosophical Critique of the Contemporary Human Sciences "The Possibility of Naturalism" extends Bhaskar's critical realist philosophy into the realm of social science. He argues for a realist approach to understanding human behaviour that transcends the limitations of both positivism and hermeneutics. Bhaskar introduces the concept of explanatory critique, which seeks to uncover and address the underlying causes of social phenomena. This book is a must-read for students and scholars interested in the methodological and philosophical underpinnings of social research, offering tools for both analysing and effecting social change.
Dialectic: The Pulse of Freedom In "Dialectic: The Pulse of Freedom," Roy Bhaskar extends his critical realist philosophy to explore the concept of dialectic. He presents a compelling argument for the role of dialectical reasoning in understanding and transforming reality. Bhaskar introduces the concept of 'four-planar social being' and the 'dialectic of freedom,' offering a robust framework for analysing social change. This book is essential for anyone interested in the philosophical underpinnings of dialectics and its application to social and political activism.
From East to West: Odyssey of a Soul "From East to West" chronicles Roy Bhaskar's personal and philosophical journey, blending autobiography with a deep exploration of Eastern and Western philosophical traditions. Bhaskar examines the intersections between critical realism and spiritual practices, offering insights into how these can inform and enrich each other. This book provides a unique perspective on the integration of spiritual wisdom and critical social theory, making it a valuable resource for those interested in holistic approaches to social change and personal growth.
Reflections on MetaReality: Transcendence, Emancipation, and Everyday Life In "Reflections on MetaReality," Bhaskar explores the concept of metareality, a philosophical perspective that goes beyond the constraints of critical realism to address issues of transcendence and human potential. He discusses the possibilities for human emancipation and transformation, emphasising the interconnectedness of all beings and the potential for collective awakening. This book offers profound insights into the deeper dimensions of reality and the possibilities for creating a more just and compassionate world. It is an inspiring read for those committed to both personal and social transformation.
